Heart Beat Club in person: three hours of hands-on CPR for parents, $42, or free through your group
Royal Life Saving WA's face-to-face Heart Beat Club teaches infant and child CPR and first aid on real manikins in Perth for $42. Community groups can apply for a grant to run it free.

Reading about CPR and doing it are two different things. Your hands need to know how hard to press on a chest the size of a baby's, and how to hold a choking baby face-down along your arm. That only comes from practice.
Royal Life Saving WA's Heart Beat Club has a free one-hour online version (we wrote about it in Build confidence in caring for little ones with free online first aid learning). The face-to-face class is the next step: three hours in a room with a trainer and a manikin.
What it is
A three-hour class run by Royal Life Saving WA for parents and carers of children under five. Royal Life Saving calls it a community education initiative, built to grow your skills and confidence. You leave with a Heart Beat Club Participation Certificate.
What you practise
- Infant CPR and child CPR, which are not the same, on training manikins
- What to do when a baby or child is choking
- First aid for burns and scalds
- First aid after a drowning
- First aid for poisoning
No first aid experience is needed. There are no prerequisites.
Who it is for
Parents, grandparents and other carers of babies and children under five. If two of you share the care, book two places: in an emergency, the person who has practised is the one who acts.
What it costs and where
The class costs $42 a person. Classes are listed at Bayswater Waves, Beatty Park Leisure Centre and Kingsway Indoor Stadium in Madeley. When we checked on 29 October 2026, the next class was Saturday 14 November 2026 at Kingsway, 12:30pm to 3:30pm. New dates are added through the year, so look at the booking page for the latest list.
Free classes through a community group
Royal Life Saving WA gives grants, supported by WA Health, so community organisations can run Heart Beat Club free for their parents. The grants are for groups that support families who often miss out on CPR training: regional families, Aboriginal families, families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and families on low incomes.
How it works:
- The organisation applies online. Applications are open all year.
- The class needs 10 to 20 people. Most must have a child or grandchild under five.
- The trainer comes to the group's own venue, in Perth or the regions (regional classes depend on a local trainer being free).
- The grant pays the course fee. The group pays for anything else, such as the venue or childcare, and handles sign-ups.
- Each organisation or location can get one grant a financial year.
If you belong to a playgroup, a parents' group at your child health centre, a family centre or a community group, show them the grant page. One email from you could put twenty parents through CPR for nothing. Our post Playgroup WA: other parents, one morning a week, and a free first visit has more on finding a group.

Online, in person, or both?
Start with the free online course tonight if you can. It gives you the steps. Then book the class, so your hands learn them too. If $42 is a stretch, ask your group about the grant, or read Tiny Tots First Aid: one morning with St John WA to learn baby and toddler CPR for another hands-on option.
